About the Artist

Joseph Kohnke is a Los Angeles-based artist whose work explores realms of life support, sustenance and other systems of existence. He does this by way of mechanized and static sculpture. His work has been exhibited internationally, featured in solo and group exhibitions at: Angles Gallery (Los Angeles), Artspace (Peterborough), Stride Gallery (Calgary), Vox Populi Gallery (Philadelphia), Action Art Actuel(Quebec), International Museum of Surgical Science (Chicago), Kasia Kay Gallery (Chicago), Gwanhoon Gallery (Seoul), & Artlab (Beijing), Chicago Cultural Center, Grunt Gallery (Vancouver), Three Walls Gallery (Chicago), Klein Art Works (Chicago) and Tokyo National University. He is the recipient of an Illinois Arts Council Fellowship (2007), an Illinois Arts Council Assistance Award (2006) and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago Trustee Merit Scholarship (2001-2003). Reviews of his work have appeared in The LA Times, The Chicago Tribune, Art Letter, UR Chicago, The Chicago Sun-Times, and Sculpture. He received an MFA in Art and Technology from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2007) and is currently the manager of the Model Shop at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA.
